Fireplace surrounds and feature walls

Turn the fireplace into an architectural focal point.

From refined surrounds to floor-to-ceiling feature walls, ARA Flooring Ltd plans fireplace tile around proportion, substrate, openings, edges, clearances, and the character of the room.

The ARA approach

A feature that should belong to the room.

A fireplace is naturally prominent. Tile size, pattern, veining, corner treatment, hearth conditions, adjacent finishes, and the relationship to the mantel or television all affect whether the result feels integrated.

We approach the fireplace as a complete composition, not simply a surface to cover.

Built with precision. Finished with pride.

Scope

Fireplace design directions

01

Modern Linear Fireplaces

Clean surrounds and feature walls coordinated with long openings, minimal edges, and contemporary proportions.

02

Floor-to-Ceiling Tile

Vertical installations designed around ceiling height, wall width, openings, corners, and visual alignment.

03

Large-Format Porcelain

Stone-look or concrete-look surfaces with fewer joints and carefully planned pattern continuity.

04

Traditional Surrounds

Balanced layouts that complement mantels, hearths, millwork, and established architectural details.

05

Hearth Tile

Durable surfaces planned around transitions, exposed edges, dimensions, and applicable clearances.

06

Feature Walls

Tile compositions that extend beyond the firebox and create a deliberate focal element in the room.

The hidden work

From opening to finished feature

Each stage supports the next. The finished surface is only as dependable as the preparation, planning, and decisions beneath it.

01

Review the Fireplace

The firebox, manufacturer requirements, existing materials, substrate, clearances, and adjacent finishes are evaluated.

02

Establish Proportion

Tile size, layout, wall limits, mantel conditions, television placement, and focal lines are coordinated.

03

Prepare the Surface

The substrate is corrected or rebuilt as necessary for a flat, stable, compatible tile installation.

04

Plan Cuts and Edges

Openings, corners, terminations, profiles, miters, and pattern continuity are resolved before final setting.

05

Install Precisely

Coverage, alignment, joint consistency, plane, and movement considerations are managed throughout the installation.

06

Complete the Feature

Grout, sealant joints, exposed edges, transitions, and final cleaning complete the composition.

Materials & systems

Materials selected for the fireplace assembly

Tile, mortar, backer, profiles, grout, and sealants must be appropriate for the substrate, fireplace type, exposure, and manufacturer requirements. We verify those conditions before recommending an assembly.

Questions homeowners ask

Fireplace tile questions

Clear answers are part of a professional process. Project-specific conditions are always evaluated before final recommendations are made.

Can tile be installed over existing brick or stone?

Sometimes, but the existing surface must be evaluated for stability, contamination, flatness, bond, projection, clearances, and the finished thickness of the new assembly.

Can a fireplace be tiled to the ceiling?

Often, yes. Wall structure, fireplace requirements, tile weight, layout, transitions, corners, and adjacent elements need to be planned first.

Is porcelain suitable around a fireplace?

Many porcelain products are suitable, but the fireplace manufacturer requirements, clearances, substrate, mortar, and specific tile limitations must still be confirmed.

How do you finish exposed tile edges?

Depending on the tile and design, options may include profiles, factory edges, miters, trim pieces, or transitions into adjacent materials.
