Exterior tile installation

Exterior tile must be designed for Ohio—not simply moved outdoors.

ARA Flooring Ltd evaluates exterior tile projects around exposure, drainage, freeze-thaw conditions, movement, slope, substrate, and manufacturer-approved materials.

The ARA approach

Exterior performance begins with the whole assembly.

Outdoor tile is exposed to water, temperature changes, sunlight, movement, and freeze-thaw cycling. A product that works indoors is not automatically appropriate outside, and a beautiful surface cannot compensate for poor drainage or an unsuitable substrate.

We review the complete condition before recommending whether tile is appropriate and how the installation should be assembled.

Built with precision. Finished with pride.

Scope

Selected exterior applications

01

Covered Patios

Tile installations evaluated for slab condition, slope, moisture, movement, transitions, and weather exposure.

02

Porches and Entries

Durable surfaces planned around drainage, traction, elevation changes, edges, and adjoining materials.

03

Exterior Steps

Treads, risers, nosings, slopes, edge protection, traction, and water management considered together.

04

Outdoor Feature Walls

Vertical tile applications using products and assemblies approved for the specific exposure.

05

Selected Commercial Areas

Exterior installations where use, maintenance, access, exposure, and substrate requirements are well defined.

06

Repair Evaluation

Assessment of failed exterior assemblies to determine whether replacement tile is appropriate within a new system.

The hidden work

Plan for weather before selecting the finish

Each stage supports the next. The finished surface is only as dependable as the preparation, planning, and decisions beneath it.

01

Assess Exposure

Sun, rain, snow, freeze-thaw cycles, roof coverage, orientation, and water paths are reviewed.

02

Evaluate the Substrate

Condition, cracks, slope, drainage, movement, moisture, elevation, and transitions are checked.

03

Confirm Materials

Tile, mortar, membrane, grout, profiles, and sealants are verified for exterior use and the expected conditions.

04

Prepare and Protect

Necessary correction, slope work, membrane, movement accommodation, or edge treatment is completed.

05

Install for Coverage

Mortar coverage, working conditions, joint design, drainage, alignment, and cure requirements are managed carefully.

06

Review Maintenance

Use, cleaning, seasonal inspection, sealant joints, drainage, and limitations of the finished assembly are explained.

Materials & systems

Exterior-rated components are not optional

Every layer must be compatible with outdoor exposure. We use manufacturer-approved products and do not assume that an interior assembly can simply be repeated outside.

Exterior-rated porcelain
Approved exterior mortars
Compatible membranes
Movement-joint materials
Exterior-rated grout
Weather-resistant profiles and sealants

Questions homeowners ask

Exterior tile questions

Clear answers are part of a professional process. Project-specific conditions are always evaluated before final recommendations are made.

Can any porcelain tile be used outdoors?

No. Slip resistance, absorption, freeze-thaw suitability, thickness, manufacturer approval, surface finish, and the intended application all matter.

Can tile be installed over an existing concrete patio?

Possibly, but cracks, movement, slope, drainage, contamination, moisture, elevation, edge conditions, and structural suitability must be evaluated first.

Why are movement joints important outside?

Exterior assemblies experience substantial thermal and moisture-related movement. Movement accommodation must be designed into the installation rather than treated as an afterthought.

Is exterior tile maintenance-free?

No exterior finish is maintenance-free. Drainage, joints, sealants, cleaning, winter exposure, and periodic inspection remain important.
